Flutgraben II railway bridge

The Flutgraben flood channel, which was created at the end of the 18th century and surrounds Erfurt's historic old town, offers flood protection in the event of the River Gera overflowing. The Halle-Guntershausen line crosses the Flutgraben with 4 tracks at 109.250 kilometres. In order to take the tracks of the new Ebensfeld-Erfurt line in future as well, it had to be extended to the north. The new structure was built as a single-span girder bridge with a span of approximately 39 metres. The bridge is about 21 metres wide and has an angle of intersection of 50 gon.

The bridge over the Flutgraben is in a park area. The aim was to spare the adjacent areas and reduce to a minimum any encroachment into them. Expert evidence on the ecological impact was therefore obtained before the work went ahead. On completion of the work, the affected areas were returned to their original state. The construction work was carried out in two stages from 2005 to 2008.
