Planning process
The upgraded Nuremberg-Ebensfeld line is the southernmost section of the Germany Unity Transport Project No. 8. The German government added the project to the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan in 1992. A number of alternatives and subsidiary alternatives for a possible route for the line were examined and assessed based on operational, environmental, engineering and cost-efficiency aspects. Taking into account the land-use planning objectives and the environmental consequences, the Free State of Bavaria approved the upgrading of the existing Nuremberg-Ebensfeld line to four tracks in a regional planning procedure in 1993.
In the course of the project, the infrastructure will also be put in place for the S-Bahn (rapid transit) line between Nuremberg and Forchheim.
