The planned two-track Rödental section of the new Ebensfeld-Erfurt line east of the municipality of Weißenbrunn vorm Wald crosses the Pöpelbach Valley and the Froschgrundsee lake at a height of about 65 metres.

The valley has steep sides and a level valley floor about 300 metres wide containing the Froschgrundsee lake. On its south side there is a municipal road and the River Itz, which takes its natural course and has wooded banks, and on the north side there is the St 2206 main road.
