The planned two-track Ebensfeld-Erfurt line crosses the Masse Valley north-east of the municipality of Masserberg and west of the municipality of Oelze in the administrative district of Saalfeld-Rudolstadt (Thuringia) at a height of about 78 metres.
This is a deep, undeveloped, V-shaped valley with steep sides that rise with an increasingly gentle gradient the higher they get. The valley has an almost symmetrical cross-section. The section of the wooded Masse Valley through which the line runs is bordered by Hinterer Schmiedebacher Kopf to the south and Fleckberg to the north. The River Masse flows from west to east along the valley floor, and the L1138 road runs along the foot of the northern side of the valley from Masserberg to Oelze.
