The planned two-track Ebensfeld-Erfurt line crosses the Oelze Valley east of the municipality of Altenfeld in the administrative district of Ilmkreis (Thuringia) at a height of about 71 metres.

This is a deep, undeveloped, V-shaped valley with steep sides and an almost symmetrical cross-section. The Oelze flows through the wooded Oelze Valley, and the road from Katzhütte to Altenfeld (Harztalstraße) runs along the foot of the south side of the valley.
