The tunnel is being built in two sections. For the 4.6 kilometre southern section, tunnelling started from an intermediate point near Stelzen in 2005. It runs for about 965 metres into the mountain from the side. From its end, tunnelling started for the main tunnel for 2 kilometres to the south portal as well as to the north. In a second stage, tunnelling is also proceeding from the north. To provide environmentally friendly access to the north portal, a further section of line, 5 kilometres in length, is being built.
