German Unity Transport Project 8

 Nuremberg – Erfurt – Halle/Leipzig – Berlin

Construction of the eastern section of the line

The line construction work in the eastern section is subdivided into the following three sections:

- Line lot 4
- Line lot 5
- Southern approach to Halle

Line lot 4 starts after 251.510 kilometres at the eastern cutting leading to the Osterberg Tunnel and ends after 272.093 kilometres to the west of the Saale-Elster Viaduct. In this section the line crosses the undulating Querfurt Plateau and runs largely through cuttings to reduce its impact on the environment to an unavoidable level.

In line lot 5 (from 279.923 to 286.905 kilometres on the new line), the line crosses the flat, intensively farmed land south-east of Halle in planning approval section 3.1.

The construction measures on the southern approach to Halle (Saale) will give the city a high-speed link to the rail network in the south. This represents a decisive improvement to the rail infrastructure of the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt.
