Kulch Tunnel

Fact and figures

The Kulch Tunnel runs for 1,331 metres under the Altenbanzer Melm range of hills. The southern portal is around 600 metres from the western edge of the municipality of Altenbanz. The tunnel is being excavated from south to north using explosives and excavators (mining methods).

According to the plan, the excavated material from the tunnel and cuttings is to be reincorporated and used to improve the track bed. Around 1.5 million cubic metres of excess material is being stored in the Weinberg, Steinbruchsäcker and Breites Stück landfills.
