Noise protection
The effects of noise and vibration induced by rail traffic were examined over the whole route, in conformity with the 16th Federal Noise Abatement Order.
As a result, a total of 3,710 m of noise barriers at heights of between one and five metres above the running surface of the rail are planned. In addition to the noise barriers, some of the spoil will be re-used for noise protection embankments within the scope of terrain modelling. Some of them can be seen in the illustration below.
The inside walls of the troughs through which the freight trains will enter and leave the tunnel will have an acoustically-absorbent lining, to cut noise emissions.
In addition to the above noise protection measures, a total of 6,670 m of specially-monitored track will be used on the freight line. This entails regular inspection of the permanent way by a noise-monitoring vehicle. The rail profile will be reground if required. These measures will reduce noise emissions by 3 dB(A).
Additional noise protection requirements for the restriction of working hours and machinery emissions will be specified during the construction phase.
