German Unity Transport Project 8

 Nuremberg – Erfurt – Halle/Leipzig – Berlin

Nuremberg southern connection

The tunnel line ends on a curve on existing line 5950 between Tiefes Feld and Grossreuth, which is also on a curve at this point. The two existing tracks will be moved apart and relaid, with the new tracks for line 5955 between them. All four tracks will be laid on ballast in this area. Vibration-proofing measures will be taken on part of this section, so no vibration in excess of legally-admissible limits need be anticipated, even in buildings very close to the line.

The two pairs of track will meet at the new "Kleinreuth junction". The crossovers will be near the Wallensteinstrasse road bridge, which will remain largely unchanged. Crash barriers will be fitted to its column bases and new overhead line contact protection to the parapets. The current protruding metal plates will be removed and the railings replaced by sealed glass panels.

A continuous noise barrier approximately five metres high will be erected as close as possible to the track on the inside of the curve between the Rothenburger Strasse and Wallensteinstrasse bridges. This will protect residents from noise within the meaning of the 16th Federal Noise Abatement Order.

Some changes to the road itself will be made on the Uffenheimer Strasse side. Terrain modelling will take place between Rothenburger Strasse and Hügelstrasse, and Uffenheimer Strasse moved to the west side. It will be resurfaced throughout and act as a field and woodland path. Paths will also be laid out on the relandscaped ground.

Only slight adjustments will be made to Uffenheimer Strasse east of Hügelstrasse, where a noise barrier will also be erected. Hügelstrasse itself will remain largely unchanged. However, a rainwater retention pond will be created for trackbed drainage (see illustration above).

Further terrain modelling will take place between Hügelstrasse and Wallensteinstrasse. An attractive design is planned here too, in agreement with the environmental authorities and the Nuremberg Town Planning Department.

The freight line will end at km 4.8, which is approximately where the bridge takes the Wallensteinstrasse over the railway. No further upgrading is currently anticipated in the direction of Hohe Marter in this VDE 8.1 sub-project. This marks the end of VDE 8.1.
